Victory for Vinnie

Vinnie Calabrese has taken out the Ramsgate RSL Snooker Club 2016 Golden Age Snooker Championship, with a 4-2 victory over Frank Karaberas at the weekend.

Proudly sponsored for the 3rd consecutive year by Golden Age Finance & Investment Group, this year’s event was a huge success with a revised format attracting a record 46 entrants. The top quality field travelled from Newcastle, Illawarra and all over Sydney to compete in this popular event.

Saturday’s play was divided between Ramsgate RSL and Georges River 16ft Sailing Club, to get through the large number of games. Both clubs enjoyed plenty of great snooker, with a plethora of breaks throughout the day.

The first quarter final was played on Saturday night, with Vinnie Calabrese defeating a gallant Jom Wangta.

Sunday saw the remaining three quarter finals played.

Ramsgate’s own (and Golden Age Managing Director) Patrick Yeung, defeated Glen Wilkinson in a match closer than the 3-0 result portrays.

Nick Vasic defeated Brett Watson (aka Billy Blackwood) 3-0.  Billy unlucky not to take it to a fourth frame, jawing a pink that would have seen him take the third.

Frank Karaberas defeated Hassan Kerde in a block buster game that went down to the wire. Hassan came from 2-0 down, scraping his way back to 2-2, including an impressive 80 break, but Frank proved too strong.

The semi-finals then lifted another notch! The audience were treated to an exceptional display from all 4 semi finalists.

Patrick appeared extremely focused, making a lovely 80 break to take his game with Vinnie to 1-1. Vinnie replied in the next frame with a world class 130 clearance, the highest of the tournament. An absolute pleasure to witness. Vinnie went on to win 3-1.

On the other table, Nick & Frank competed in an epic battle. Nick was in top form, looking unstoppable. But Frank dug deep, holding on to the very end – winning the 5th and final frame on the black ball.

Attracting quite a large audience, the final did not disappoint!

In his first tournament back after a long spell away from competition, Frank showed he was still well and truly up for the fight, taking the very first frame.

Vinnie went on to win the next 3 frames, proving he is a class act with another incredible break, this time 110 in the 4th frame.

Frank won the 5th, but Vinnie proved too strong in the end taking the 6th to record a 4-2 victory.

Congratulations to both players on an outstanding tournament!

It was great to see Frank back at the tables after such a long time. He should be very proud of his achievement, and we hope to see him back for more.

Vinnie was certainly the standout player of the tournament. With breaks including 130, 110 & 74, he played a very high standard of snooker all weekend and was an absolute pleasure to watch. We wish him the best of luck at the upcoming Nationals in Melbourne during August!

This tournament would not have been possible without the support of our major sponsor, Golden Age Finance & Investment Group. To Patrick Yeung and Joe Loong, thank you!

We are extremely grateful to Ramsgate RSL, for providing such terrific amenities and service. The staff did a wonderful job looking after everyone over the entire weekend, and the playing conditions were second to none. Feedback from many players was that the tables are amongst the best in Sydney!

Thank you also to Georges River 16ft Sailing Club for allowing us to use your snooker room for this event. Your ongoing support is very much appreciated.

Stuart was in charge of proceedings at the Sailing Club on Saturday, and also assisted with planning and preparation. Thank you!

Personally, I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the players, referees and spectators. You all made this such an enjoyable experience! We had so much support, from so many people. It was quite overwhelming. Thank you all.

I hope you all enjoyed this event as much as we did, and hope to see you all back again next year!
